In response to intense lobbying from ATA officials and Alice Marble —who published a scathing open letter in the magazine American Lawn Tennis —Althea Gibson received an invitation to compete in the United States National Championships (now the U.S. Open) at Forest Hills.

Gibson was the 1st black player ever to be selected and made her debut 3 days later on her 23rd birthday.
