​December 13, 1944: The Navy Program Admits African-American Women

African-American women were permitted into U.S. Navy’s WAVES program. Under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, African-American women were allowed to join the U.S. Navy’s war-time officer training program, WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). 

It would mark the 1st time that African-American women were integrated into U.S. Navy programs, which had been fiercely criticized for their restrictive racial policies.
