​November 15, 2010: Jesse Owens Is Honored In Cleveland

The city of Cleveland renamed East Roadway, between Rockwell and Superior avenues in Public Square, Jesse Owens Way, in hopes that it will keep the great Jesse Owens on the minds of all sports fans.

The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, Cleveland City Council and athletes from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District held a street-renaming ceremony in honor of Jesse Owens on November 15 on Public Square.

Gloria Hemphill Owens, daughter of Jesse Owens, was flown in from Chicago for the celebration. Jesse Owens, a graduate of East Technical High School in Cleveland, OH, won four gold medals during the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics in Germany.
