​September 17, 1968: The TV Show Julia Makes It’s Debut

Julia was one of the 1st weekly series to depict an African American woman in a non-stereotypical role. Previous tv series featured African American lead characters, but the characters were usually servants. 

Actress and singer Diahann Carroll starred in the title role. Julia ran for 86 episodes on NBC, the show ended on March 23, 1971.

During it’s 3 year run, Julia was nominated for 5 Emmy Awards and 3 Golden Globes, with Diahann Carroll winning a Gloden Globe in 1969 for Best Female TV Star.
