1.)  Rape was a common practice during . The laws in the South embodied a race-based double standard where men accused of rape during the period were often punished with castration or death. However, white men could rape enslaved women without any punishment.

2.)  Enslaved Black women practiced self-abortion. They found medicine or herbs to terminate pregnancies. Chewing on cotton root was one of the popular methods to end a pregnancy without anyone finding out. It was also accessible because most women worked in cotton fields. By resisting reproduction, enslaved women took control over their bodies and their lives.

3.)  Many enslaved Black women, also known as “fancy maids,” were sold at auction into concubine service or prostitution called the “fancy trade” to “serve” white males sexually. These enslaved Black women could command a high price.

4.)  Many historians believe that George Washington’s wife, Martha, owned two of her half sisters who were mixed-race. They were born to an enslaved woman owned by Martha’s father. And within the family, it was believed that he was the women’s father. George Washington became the owner of the women when he married Martha.

6.)  Native American nations owned enslaved Black people as well. By 1860, the Cherokees had 4,600 enslaved people; the Choctaws, 2,344; the Creeks, 1,532; the Chickasaws, 975; and the Seminoles, 500. Some Native American owners were as harsh and cruel as any white master. Native Americans were often hired to catch runaway Black people. In fact, catching runaways was a lucrative way of life for some, especially the Chickasaws.

7.)  Not all Black people who came to America were enslaved. Many were free sailors or indentured servants like some whites were. After serving their terms, which lasted at most seven to 10 years, they were free. This occurred during the 1600s.

8.)  The use of African-Americans as spies was common throughout the Civil War. Harriet Tubman was a spy in the Civil War working for the Union. Another spy, Mary Elizabeth Bowser, was born an enslaved woman owned by the Van Lew family who freed her and sent her to school. Bowser then returned to Richmond, where Elizabeth Van Lew, her former owner, was running one of the war’s most sophisticated spy rings. She spied directly on Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

We need to also mention that there were Black owners of slaves. Prior to the Civil war there were over 400 Blacks who owned slaves in Virginia. The Biggest slave owner in South Carolina prior to the Civil War was a Black person. Louisiana had the largest number of Blacks to own slaves also prior to the Civil War.
I am not giving this information to brighten up the whites who own slaves, just trying to tell the whole truth about this country’s past. I do not know how the Black owners treated their slaves. This would be worthwhile information to have.
Prior to the ending of Indentured Servant in the colony, Blacks owned white slaves as well as Black Slaves.
The slave system was definitely a “peculiar institution”.

Some of the black slave owner bought their own family members, to save them from the evil of their white slave owners. Once they were in his hand, they stayed close.

Which is why we must see racism like slavery as institutional. It doesn’t matter whether the person who uses the system to oppress you looks like you since his behavior is institutionalized and his attitudes of disrespect and contempt about you and even about himself are institutionally reinforced and protected. The impact on blacks is on the collective whether or not a few people of color also benefit from the system. Did you know that it was a person of color who went to court and had it formally declared that the children of black slaves automatically inherited slave status and belonged to their parents slave master. That was already the informal institutional practice but he formally put an end to the notion of indentured servitude with regard to blacks and helped to formally move blacks from indentured servitude to an inheritance of slavery so he could benefit from increasing his slave stock. Not all people of color care about blacks as a group and they are no different from other groups in that regard however the consequences are more grave because of the economic benefit of slavery and racism to the world economy.

You have to think : 1. Native Americans were trying to keep their land, and had no inherent association to Africans brought to the Americas, by Europeans. 2. The Native American tribal groups mentioned made up a very small percentage who tried to emulate white society of their times. 3. Just WHY should NAs “be down” with AAs? If they are, Fine, but it isn’t a requirement. They have their OWN issues with European-Americans. 4. After the Civil War, there were 100s of African-American U.S. soldiers, whose job it was to keep “U.S. Law and Order” (Buffalo Soldiers) in the western states. Their jobs were the same as the white soldiers.

Blacks did own slaves, but usually it was a way of keeping family members close and unharmed. I/m certain there were Black Slave owners who were brutal…however the instances were few in comparison to how Blacks were treated by White Slave Owners.

  • linda tart January 21, 2019 - 6:16 pm

High yellow, were usually mulattos. Octoroon and quadroons were the ones that could really pass for white and yes, they were in demand, usually in Louisiana.
