Emmett Ashford becomes the 1st African-American umpire in organized baseball by being authorized to be a substitute umpire in the Southwestern International League.

Nicknamed “Ash”, in 1966 he would become the 1st African American umpire in Major League Baseball, working in the American League from 1966-1970.
