Heavy D may not have reached the heights of Notorious B.I.G. and Nas when it came to acclaim in the 1990s. Nevertheless, he was one of the most beloved rappers in hip-hop. The late rhymer would’ve turned 48 today (May 24).

Heavy D & the Boyz would be embraced for their memorable party jams like “Mr. Big Stuff” and “The Overweight Lover’s in the House” in 1987. Heavy D, whose real name is Dwight Errington Myers, was among a few hip-hop artists who embraced New Jack Swing in the ’90s. The group’s 1989 effort Big Tyme help usher in the New Jack Swing movement with their chart-topping single, “We Got Our Own Thang” and “Somebody For Me.”

Heavy D & the Boyz will mostly likely be remembered for their 1991 hit “Now That We Found Love,” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group are also widely known for performing the opening song for the sketch comedy show In Living Color.
