James Edwards was an actor in film and television. He is best known for his role Private Peter Moss in the 1949 film Home of the Brave in which he portrayed a black soldier experiencing racist prejudice while serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
Edwards was born on March 6, 1918, in Hobart, Indiana. He attended Knoxville College in Tennessee and later continued his education at Northwestern University where he received a master’s degree in drama. While at school he participated in student productions and in the Federal Theatre Project.
He was commissioned during World War II as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After the war, he decided to set his eyes on the New York stage where he assumed the role of the war hero in the touring play Deep Are the Roots.

Throughout much of his life, Edwards appeared in movies as an American soldier. Some of his films include Home of the Brave (1949), Bright Victory (1951), Men in War (1957), and several others. It was believed he was also cast in Universal’s Red Ball Express but was replaced by Sidney Poitier when he refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
It is believed that James Edwards career came to a halt when he had an affair with a white actress. James Johnson Edwards died on January 4, 1970.

Edwards career stalled when he died. He worked steadily until then. Race and an affair with a white woman had no bearing on his acting life. Do some research please.
I appeared in play with Jimmie in Hollywood 1950s, “Member of the Wedding” – he was brilliant! And couldn’t have been kinder to this amateur little white boy. He was a surrogate big brother to me. RIP

Mr Edwards was from my hometown of Hammond IN not Hobart. I’m from his hometown. Hobart when he was born was 100 percent white. However, it’s possible that he could have been born in Munchie IN. Sometimes you have to agreed with Trump on media facts.

Discovered after a little research, Edwards died of a massive heart attack at the tender age of 51. R.I.P.
My mother knew James Edwards in Hammond Indiana. She was his age, born in 1918. She told me she was working in a small store near their housing complex, He used to come in to see her there and they were friends. She told me he came in one day and told her he was leaving to become an actor ( I seem to remember that she said he was going to California, but I’m not certain of this). This was likely around 1940. I last remember him when I was about 14 (1957). We went to a friends home because we were going to have dinner with Mr. Edwards. Our friend was also from Hammond and knew James there. Unfortunately, we waited but he never showed. I still liked him because my mother spoke highly of him. I just watched Patton again, after nearly 50 years. He was a handsome man, dying to young.
