Johnson had just finished his sophomore season in college, became the 1st underclassman to be drafted 1st overall.
He went on to win the NBA championship with the Lakers in his rookie season. He also won the Finals MVP Award becoming the 1st and ONLY rookie ever to win the award.
The Lakers, who obtained the New Orleans Jazz’ first-round pick in a trade, won the coin flip and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Chicago Bulls were awarded the second pick.
