So POPular!’s Janet Mock discusses Nicki Minaj’s new Madame Tussauds wax figure which features Minaj on all fours & the way people have used it to objectify her. Mock also talks about how black women’s bodies have been objectified throughout history.

I agree with all the points that Janet Mock made except for the fact that she shifted the responsibility of the statue of Minaj from Nicki herself (even though she was totally for it and had control to say, “no I don’t want a statue, or no I don’t want a statue that looks like that”), to Madame Tussauds. I also think it’s kind of a joke to call that video “iconic,” but whatever sells I guess… The video is about “iconic” as MC Hammer’s Kentucky Fried Chicken Commerical and will undobutly fade into the recesses of our memory in much the same way. Although I’m quiet sure anyone who calls that video iconic does will probably not remember Hammer dancing around for chicken. But my main point is Nicki Minaj’s whole act is about objectifying herself. She constantly putting herself in these types positions, but Mock never calls this into question. I think that’s a little disingenuous on her part. All Nicki does is sell sex. Her name is “Minaj” for Christ’s sake, as in Ménage à trois; you know the French word for three people having sex. LoL

If you want to make a feminist critique that’s cool. I’m down with that, but you have to have enough integrity to call out not only men, public institutions, and corporations, but also women who perpetuate this system of sexism and patriarchy.

Nikki has stereotyped and objectified herself.
