In a video posted on The Black History School, we learn more about In 1898, Cuba tried to gain their independence from Spain, and the U.S. supported them. Spain sank the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba which ignited the Spanish-American War. William McKinley led that war and the U.S. won by taking over Spain’s territories: Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam. While McKinley was taking over new territories, he neglected domestic issues. Violence against Blacks was at an all time high in the South, especially lynchings. He also banned the recruitment and service of Black soldiers for the Spanish-American war.
