Randolph Miller was a former who slaved who founded his own newspaper in 1865, The Weekly Blade.
Miller arrived in Chattanooga, Tennessee from Georgia in 1864. He found work as a pressman for several newspapers before opening his own paper. The Blade was a weekly newspaper and was one of the only papers in the country published by a former slave. The paper was used as a way to advocate for the rights of African Americans throughout various communities. The paper ran for twelve years.
In 1905, as a rebellion against the imposition of Jim Crow laws exploded across Tennessee, Miller organized a three-week boycott of Chattanooga’s newly-segregated streetcars. He started his own taxi service in 1905, the Hack Line, that ran between Chattanooga and outlying African American communities.
After years of failing health, Miller stopped the publication of The Blade. He died at the age of 86 in 1916.
