Lillian Hayman was an actress and singer. Hayman was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 17, 1922. After completing her primary education, Hayman attended Wilberforce University where she graduated with a BA degree. Her professional acting career began shortly after graduating.
In 1968, Hayman won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, for playing the mother of Leslie Uggams’s in Hallelujah, Baby!. Her acting soon caught the attention of casting agents. from the Soap Opera of One Life to Live. She was cast as Sadie Gray from 1968-1986. Hayman also recorded a gospel album, “My Prayer,” and appeared in the film “Purlie Victorious.”
In 1975, Hayman portrayed Lucrezia Borgia in the 1975 film Mandingo, and made her final feature film appearance in the film’s 1976 sequel, Drum. Lillian Hayman died of a heart attack in Queens, New York on October 25, 1994, she was 72.
