We Did It, They Hid It: Black Woman Created the “Home Security System with Television Surveillance” In 1966

19 Posted by - August 17, 2022 - BLACK INVENTIONS, BLACK TECHNOLOGY, BLACK WOMEN

Marie Van Brittan Brown was born on this date in 1922. She was an African American nurse and inventor.

Born Marie Van Brittan in Jamaica, Queens, New York City, in 1966 she had the idea for a home surveillance device. She applied for a patent along with her husband Albert Brown in 1966 for a closed circuit television security system. They created a system for a motorized camera to show images on a monitor. The patent, #3,482,037 was granted. Her devise was the forerunner to the modern security system.

Brown’s system had a set of four peepholes and a camera that could slide up and down to look out each one. Anything the camera picked up would appear on a monitor. An additional feature of Brown’s invention was that a person also could unlock a door with a remote control. Marie Brown told The New York Times the couple invented the device because police were slow in responding to emergencies in their neighborhood.

  • I’ve learned result-oriented things as a result of your blog site. One other thing I’d prefer to say is newer laptop operating systems are inclined to allow a lot more memory to be used, but they as well demand more storage simply to perform. If your computer can’t handle additional memory plus the newest software program requires that memory space increase, it could be the time to buy a new Laptop. Thanks

I’m curious, how could this woman be born in 1922 & 1966? And if this article is to be believed why is it the reporter doesn’t do spell check when writing this article cause he/she spelled device as devise. To me that makes this article suspect for me

      • Ryan June 17, 2019 - 11:36 am

1966 she applied for the patent try to keep up.

        • GoodTeacha June 17, 2019 - 11:52 am

Oh Karen, reading is fundamental. She was BORN in 1922. She applied for a patent for her invention in 1966. The only thing suspect here is your reading skills.

          • nick June 24, 2019 - 1:28 pm

no it also reads she was born in Jamaica Queens NYC in 1966 and born in 1922 you need to read better

          • Nichole Bernicky June 28, 2019 - 4:58 pm

Nick, commas mean a lot in sentences. Her maiden name was given in the sentence, meaning she created this system prior to marriage.

          • Roger Bass June 30, 2019 - 1:26 am

I read it correctly and I had honors English. punctuation is important. Obvious typos
However she had one patent and someone came up with a better idea and patented.

          • Kp July 12, 2019 - 1:40 am

@Nick you should learn how to read as well. She was born in 1922 and the paragraph clearly states that she DEVELOPED THE IDEA in 1966. Read it again and again and again please before passing judgment.

        • Lawrence P Saunders June 17, 2019 - 1:38 pm

The writer said she was born in 1922 and in1966 she came up with the idea you read it wrong

          • Cavisha June 24, 2019 - 9:18 pm

            Nick, read it again

          • Steve June 27, 2019 - 8:46 am

If you notice the comma, you know a punctuation mark, that signals a slight hesitation before moving on. So she was born in Queens, comma, next topic she applied for the patent in 1966. Read is fundamental. Haha!

          • Keely Emerine-Mix June 28, 2019 - 10:49 am

Karen, does it just bug the crap out of you that a Black woman invented the gorerunner of the home security monitors we all think where the brainchild of white men? Does it even bother you that, indeed, White people, usually men, get credit for a great many advances created by Black people? Or is your concern really about sentence structure and spelling in the honoring of a Black woman we all should have heard about a long time ago? I think that you might want to consider the implications of being the pedantic toad that the ladder of the three options makes you.

          • Roni June 29, 2019 - 11:45 pm

Maybe she was born again. What does it matter if she was blak anyway. White people and Chinese have created so many things and you dont hear them making noise. You black americans want to be praised about things that u cant even prove. Dont play your slavery card to be get sympathy. You did not create any surveillance, its a lie.

The haterz are the decendants of the crooks that stole our inventions…THAT IS ALL

          • Will August 18, 2019 - 7:06 pm

Admittedly awkward sentence construction, it should be obvious thzt she was born in 1922 and applied for the patent in 1966.
Also, a search at the Patent and Trademark Office will easily confirm or refute such claims

        • Trell June 17, 2019 - 3:08 pm

Karen if i read like u i wouldn’t believe it either and i cant believe u confused it hahaha but anyway BELIEVE IT

          • Ellen June 30, 2019 - 7:14 am

Ron], really? Goggle her since your simple mind can’t comprehend general knowledge. There’s no race card needed for the truth. You might want to research before your simple mind speak.

          • josef raphael June 30, 2019 - 12:37 pm

I verified that she did in fact invent it…Marie Van Brittan Brown (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999) was an African-American inventor. She was the inventor of the home security system (U.S. Patent 3,482,037) in 1966, along with her husband Albert Brown. In the same year they jointly applied for a patent, which was granted in 1969. Brown was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York;[1] she died there at the age of 76.

        • Karen Thomas June 17, 2019 - 5:25 pm

Obviously you don’t read with comprehension. “Born on this date in 1922, had the idea in 1966”.

        • Jacqueline June 18, 2019 - 7:08 am

I believe she had the Idea in 1966 and was born 1922. Did you do your research.

          • Samuella June 19, 2019 - 7:28 am

I think it was a remarkable idea. I am feel saddened so many people are not recognized for their accomplishments and the wrong people get the credit! Give a credit to w h o m credit is due.

        • Dia June 19, 2019 - 2:05 am

Born Marie van brittan then it goes to say in 1966 with husband Brown. Its written the old way and they forgot the comma. But it was to denote her name before her married name and time she created invention with the husband.

          • Sunmaster56 July 14, 2019 - 1:35 pm

For all of you doubters, as a previous commentator stated ” Google it “, I did. My punctuation might not be on point but the facts of this article is.

Karen, what is Ur problem? Why would U participate in the discussion without first making sure U as one who is denying/disputing facts and criticizing the factual basis of those facts fails to check if U are making factual statements uourself?

        • Wayne June 22, 2019 - 4:29 pm

Do your research an dont be so quick to criticize

          • Sunmaster56 July 14, 2019 - 1:35 pm

          • Michael Johnson November 11, 2019 - 12:18 pm

The article said her married name in the beginning. Then the article said the name she was born with. My question is where is her money? Did she get hers?

        • Laura June 25, 2019 - 10:27 am

She was born in 1922 and applied for Patten in 1966 you need to pay more attention

          • Keely Emerine-Mix June 28, 2019 - 10:51 am

And yes, “latter” was misspelled in my comment to Karen. I use voice to text and that happens sometimes before I can catch it. I bet it made Karen’s day. I mean, any distraction to avoid having to think about systemic racism, right?

        • George Alford June 27, 2019 - 6:05 am

How can you be a true critic if you refuse to proof read the article for clarity before you critique it? I think you are a fake critic or just a hater.

        • Butterfly June 28, 2019 - 2:51 pm

You are being petty! You are missing the whole point! Praying for people like you! The article clearly states she was born in 1922.

        • Lena October 31, 2019 - 4:45 am

Ummmmmm it doesn’t say she was born in 66. You may want to stop criticizing other people’s writing and learn to read. Commas matter!

        • Tawana November 6, 2019 - 4:01 pm

Karen, commas mean a break in the statement after the comma please read carefully. Unless I missed something it states born in Jamaica Queens, 1966, she applied for a patent. ?

      • Sandra James June 17, 2019 - 1:23 pm

She was born in 1932…she had the idea in 1966 due to slow police response. Your comprehension is off.

        • Cavisha June 24, 2019 - 9:20 pm

          Sandra, 1922 not 1932

Karen can’t read but is telling someone to spell check…?

      • Henry McKelvey June 18, 2019 - 1:47 am

Device vs devise please read before you speak because you will sound like less of an idiot:
        de·vise
        /dəˈvīz/
        Learn to pronounce
        verb
        1.
plan or invent (a complex procedure, system, or mechanism) by careful thought.
“a training program should be devised”
synonyms: conceive, think up, come up with, dream up, draw up, work out, form, formulate, concoct, design, frame, invent, coin, originate, compose, construct, fabricate, create, produce, put together, make up, develop, evolve; More

        • Henry McKelvey June 18, 2019 - 1:51 am

Devise can be used as an action as in some legal speak when filling for a patent, which I advise you not to challenge me on because I have 14 US Patents and 16 patents pending, and such language is used within the verbiage of the applications and written patents.

          • Eliane Borges June 20, 2019 - 4:06 am

            Thank you for sharing evidence!

          • David W Finney Jr June 21, 2019 - 1:23 pm

Henry Mckelvey please save Ur correction for yourself. Everyone but U appeared to understand the message so Ur corrections weren’t necessary. Why were you so moved? Are U jealous, are U a hater or is it something else? In this case, the message is more important than the method to convey the message. AND, Ur message is irrelevant & immaterial.

      • Tanya June 18, 2019 - 2:27 am

Karen, it’s public information. If you don’t believe a Black Woman invented the surveillance camera system and applied for a Patent, then do the research. You can search on uspto.gov

      • Ju? June 18, 2019 - 4:39 pm

They roasting yo dumb smart ass, because you deserve it. Thats what you get for being so quick to respond and discount something a black person has done, thats what your concern was all about, trying to debunk something because of your stupidity everyone has called you out on it.

      • Marjorie Meeks June 18, 2019 - 5:36 pm

IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE THIS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELF INSTEAD OF SPELL CHECKING. I GOOGLED IT AND FOUND MANY DIFFERENT SITES SAYING THE SAME THING. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TYPE IN HER NAME AND ASK WHO SHE WAS. Marie Van Brittan Brown – Wikipedia
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Van_Brittan_Brown
Marie Van Brittan Brown (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999) was an African-American inventor. She was the inventor of the home security system (U.S. …

I saw the same articles & I believe she invented it, but one article said she was born into slavery in 1922? I don’t understand how that’s possible, when slavery was already abolished in 1865

          • Michael June 22, 2019 - 2:31 pm

Theirs still slavery today so stop where your att ??

      • Max June 19, 2019 - 9:45 am

      • Juanita June 19, 2019 - 6:38 pm

You have caught it. A lot of black history that’s being filtered through to us is misleading. Stay vigil.

      • Suprina June 21, 2019 - 5:34 pm

They over lapped the conversation it was in 1966 the invention

      • Talya June 26, 2019 - 11:10 am

They gave the patent #. Gheez look it up! Are you non-black? SMH

      • Tim June 26, 2019 - 11:06 pm

Remember the use of a comma? It’s a pause– going from her place of birth to her invention skips from one clause (idea) to another. Additionally, “Born Marie Van Brittian in Jaimaica Queens…” is talking about her maiden name. Yes, the author commited a typo with the second use of “device”, but you and Nick both need to brush up on basic grammar before you play English teacher.

      • Daniel June 28, 2019 - 9:15 am

I think you have a problem with reading and understanding

      • Paul Brandel June 29, 2019 - 11:39 pm

Read the article again, You’re the one who is confused

      • Stanley Frere June 30, 2019 - 8:12 am

You obviously have a problem believing that black people could have invented something as sophisticated as this security devices because there was spelling error in the narrative; how racist of you, how about looking at the jar of peanut butter in your closet and the man who developed dozens of products from the peanut, he was George Washington Carver a Black man.

      • Janice Scott July 7, 2019 - 4:32 pm

IThe article said the patent was filed in 1966, which makes me think you wouldnt believe this story anyway. Please dyo being petty and realize that was created, established, and built on ideas that did not belong to whites. Whites are really good appropriating other peoples inventons, discoveries and ways of life.

      • Joe July 15, 2019 - 6:06 am

I agree, the article “could have been” written better, however the facts remain pure and true. While she devised and patented her idea, it was improved upon by others, and the credit , the true credit, was diverted away from the original inventor.

While the early bird gets the worm; the second mouse gets the cheese.

      • Leshomo July 18, 2019 - 2:31 am

      • Kora Fields-Jones August 16, 2019 - 3:46 am

She was born in 1922 and invented the device in 1966, she was 44yrs old at the time.

      • Lee November 1, 2019 - 4:25 am

The right word divise was used correctly. Google the meaning Karen and not be so quick to judge. Look at the date. Do you know how many people were uneducated and still are to this day. Some never learned how to read. You came her to comment on spelling get out and stay out. Your point is reckless. The article might be too suspect for your perfect world. Look’s like you might need a few classes. BTW did you mean suspect as in how the bible was manufactured? Because thats a story has yet to be proven.

      • Michelle November 4, 2019 - 8:42 pm

Instead of complaining of suspicion, research the patent #, for yourself.

Yes they said she was born in 1922, and invented the surveillance in 1966

Oh look at all the defensive black people on here getting offended all because someone got confused. No she didn’t come up with it first if you wanna get technical Edison did after he stole Tesla’s ideas. Black people sure love to claim to be first at alot of things that they actually weren’t. Y’all claim you created hip hop but literally stole tempos and beats from other songs and wrote lyrics as basic nursery rhymes …. Literally stole everything to make a song and said you created it. Egyptians were black Jesus was black, all man came from Africa, blah blah blah , yet black people came from tribes … Yes tribes in Africa that used tiki torch like made devices for light. Reverse racism is a great thing in America .. it’s almost like if your black , your allowed to be racist and hate other people because of their skin color ethnicity or name and get away with it! It’s almost as if the white guilt allows black people to make false claims until they get enough blind followers to just agree from their white guilt so they can have their way to instead of just earning it. There’s good reason why she didn’t get the patent… Because someone already made it jack asses.

You are a dumb ass everything you have is all wrong and it is typical for a white dude to not to believe what a black person has done because y’all are known for stealing shit and covering it up..you can simply tell you are a racist prick that clearly dont like black people. Thomas Edison didn’t Ides create the first home surveillance camera she created the movie camera stupid ass.

Karen nobody wants to give credit where is due. You have the world wide web at your fingertips. There are many different countries that speak English. Spelling and pronunciation vary. If you chose try looking up the patent number. Don’t denounce someone else’s success, just because you are in a SIMPLE state of mind

She did, and Jesus was black. Moses too! I don’t know why you feel so threatened by the truth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Van_Brittan_Brown

The patent, #3,482,037 was granted. Her devise was the forerunner to the modern home security system.

Seemingly, only a Black Person can’t have a record breaking idea at the age of 44, especially a Black Woman

The woman in the photo is named Bessie Blount Griffin. She was a nurse and an inventor and a forensic handwriting specialist. I met her through my mother. She was a phenomenal woman. I wish these sites would correct this information .

  • Talya June 26, 2019 - 11:32 am

Black people don’t have to claim what is true. Many who expose the truth about what has been stolen from blacks are white intellectuals.

We don’t care about your guilt….Only the truth!

Karen, who you are wearing a cape for made an ignorant statement in her implication. She doesn’t correct herself, which implies that she is standing by her statement!

Perhaps you should stop with the angry white man complex.

  • Sheila June 26, 2019 - 1:42 pm

There’s many inventions we never knew our ancestors contributed to and jobs Black Americans held with no recognition, We didn’t learned about in school because Caucasians did not want to believe the people they brought over as slaves were brilliant, they wanted to think we were animals just 1/3 of a whole human being Black, and look at them now copying everything we do so I’ve come to the conclusion Black people were meant to lead, heck look what they put in the White House tRump, he has all the qualifications of a inhuman animal. The majority of Caucasians have a mental issue.

Because the greatest story of all has yet to be proven.

  • Cathy November 2, 2019 - 10:16 pm

Roni you are an idiot. Even though I’m white, a lot of white people tick me off. Whites are in the minority but they think they are better than everyone else.

I think sometimes people come up with good ideas before their time. Her idea may not have been practical at the time. It may have been very expensive to produce. We all know how expensive “the first of it’s kind” products can be. Could the average person have even been able to afford the finished product? It may have needed more engineering. Also, if she didn’t have the capital to spend to get the product manufactured, there may not have been any others that did have the money that were willing to risk the investment.

What I’d like to know…how was she born into slavery if she was born in 1922? This article doesn’t mention it…but almost every other one does. My daughter is doing a school report on Marie Van Brittan Brown and like I said…most of the articles state she was born into slavery and freed when she was 7, which would have been around 1929. Slavery ended in 1865 to me knowledge.
