On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court unanimously declared interracial marriage bans unconstitutional, striking down marriage bans in Virginia and eighteen other states in the case of Loving v. Virginia.

Richard Loving was white; his wife Mildred was black. They were married in Washington, DC, in 1958. Upon returning home to Virginia, they were arrested and charged with felony offenses, as interracial marriage was illegal under Virginia law.

After the ruling, states that had never legally recognized an interracial marriage were forced to do so, but opposition lingered. In 2000, Alabama became the last state to repeal its interracial marriage ban.
