Faubourg Treme is considered the oldest black neighborhood in America, the origin of the Southern Civil Rights Movement, and the birthplace of jazz. During slavery, free persons of color and eventually African slaves who obtained, bought, or bargained for their freedom were able to acquire and own property in Tremé.

Today, Faubourg tremé contains several museums dedicated to African American life, art, and history. It is also the home of Armstrong Park, a memorial to the great jazz legend, Louis Armstrong. The neighborhood is rich with history, but has seen some difficult times due to Hurricane Katrina.
