  1. Kappa Alpha Psi (January 5, 1911) was founded by several members of Indiana University. It has since become one of the most well-known African American fraternities.
  2. Alvin Ailey (January 5, 1931) was born and led a life as a well-known choreographer, establishing the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
  3. William H. Hastie (January 5, 1943) was born, and surprisingly is not mentioned a lot in Black History. He was the civilian aide to the secretary of war from 1940 to 1942, a post he left in order to protest segregation and discrimination in the armed forces. He was the first African American to serve as a Federal judge, as a Federal appellate judge, and as Governor of the United States Virgin Islands.
