July 6, 1854 – In Jackson, MI, the Republican Party held its first convention. They were formed be a party against slavery. Here is a Democratic poster in opposition.

    Today, the parties have switched some platforms. The Democrat party does not attract extreme left-wing zealots, but the Republican party does attract a number of them within its ranks just to get votes and because some of them are anti-immigrants.
