Chapman and Donnie Cannon co-founded American Beauty Products in the early 1980s. A company that would become one of the largest black-owned black skin and hair care products.

Donnie Cannon,  grew up near Muskogee, was a graduate of several prestigious beauty schools, including one in Paris. By the time she met Chapman, she was operating her own hair salon in Denver, where he was stationed in the Air Force. The couple lived in New York before settling in Tulsa.

Among her many civic and business honors, Donnie Cannon held an honorary doctorate from Bethune-Cookman University and was a recipient of a Pinnacle Award from the Tulsa Women’s Foundation.

American Beauty Products thrived and became the largest black-owned business in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The company went on to also become one of the top 100 black-owned businesses nationwide. The Cannons retired in the mid-1990s, eventually selling the rights to the name and products.  Donnie E. Cannon died on Dec. 19, 2013, at the age of 96.
