Looking Black on Today, the late and great singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and actor Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prince was born in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958, and showed an interest in music at a very young age. He signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. at the age of only 18.
Prince is celebrated for his many innovations in the music industry- his eclectic work, dynamic over-the-top stage presence, androgynous dress and makeup, and unmatched vocal range. Prince’s talent spanned across multiple genres such as: funk, rock, R&B, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and pop. The artist sold over 100 million records worldwide during his lifetime- hereby solidifying his status as a legend and making Prince one of the best-selling artists of all time.
Throughout his career, Prince won seven Grammy Awards, and an Academy Award for his role in the film Purple Rain. In addition, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the very first year he was eligible for the honor.
Earlier this year, we said our farewells to the living legend when he was found dead in his Paisley Park recording studio and home in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on April 21. Prince was a young and vibrant 57 years old, and was still planning performances and appearances at the time of his passing.
