In a video posted on The Black History School, we learn more about Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of the ninth American president William Henry Harrison. William Henry Harrison was the president that many perceived to be either pro-slavery or anti-slavery. He also fathered six children with his slave. His grandson, Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president, tried to respect Black voting rights by issuing bills that would protect their rights. However, they were not enforced. His effort to support the Black community was exemplified in his speech before Congress: “The colored people did not intrude themselves upon us; they were brought here in chains and held in communities where they are now chiefly bound by a cruel slave code…”

That was very educational for me. benjamin Harrison shows us that no matter what our ancestors thought of did, we need no be bound by their thoughts and actions. When we know better, we do better.
