Berry Gordy’s Motown record label issued “You’re My Everything,” a song by The Temptations, on June 13, 1967.
Rodger Penzabene, a Motown songwriter, co-wrote the first of three singles (and four songs) for the group. It peaked at number three on the R&B chart and number six on the pop chart in the United States. It would be the group’s third single from The Temptations with a Lot of Soul, released in 1967.
Since David Ruffin (who leads on the bridge and ad-libs on the outro) became The Temptations’ lead singer in 1966, this is one of the few A-side singles that was led by Eddie Kendricks. The last one was the 1966 song “Get Ready.”
The B-side of the physical retail copy sold as “You’re My “Everything” was accompanied by Kendrick’s lead vocals on a rendition of The Miracles’ “I’ve Been Good to You.” As a result, this project is one of The Temptations’ rare singles that charted on both the A and B sides of the record.
The group’s version of the previously-released single by the Miracles reached as high as number 24 on Billboards’ Bubbling Under Hot 100 music chart.
