Caribbean Literature Spotlight: Jean “Binta” Breeze

Born 1957 as Jean Breeze in Hanover, Jamaica, Binta became known for her poetry, spoken word, and stagecraft in a creative arts career starting in the 1970s.

Career

After graduating from the Jamaican School of Drama, she pursued poetry early on and was invited to the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books in early 1985. This led to her returning to the city in late-1985, this time as a theater teach at Brixton College. Binta would would leave in 1987 to pursue stage acting.

In addition to acting, Jean Breeze was involved in a number of positions within stagecraft from choreography to writing scripts. Her most recognized work came from her poetry and spoken word collections such as The Fifth Figure and On The Edge of An Island from 2006 and 1997 respectively. Her writings have also made it to audio since 1987.

Jean Breeze received a fellowship from the National Endowment for Science, Technology, and the Arts in 2003. The University of Leicester School of English made her an Honorary Creative Writing Fellow. In 2012, she received the Member of the Order of the British Empire honor. Today she continues to perform and write with her most recent work being The Verandah Poems from 2016.
