The late great Melvin Van Peebles’ 1971 motion picture called Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song has the same title as the movie’s official soundtrack.

Van Peebles also played the main character in the film. Earth, Wind & Fire, a relatively obscure band at the time, provided the music for the movie’s soundtrack. The 14-track musical offering was published on June 1, 1971, by Stax Records, according to Album of the Year.

The soundtrack was released before the film. This was done to generate exposure without exhausting too many funds on pre-release marketing expenses. The Van Peebles-directed film’s musical score was well-received by the public. It peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart category in the United States.

The long-play offering was listed No. 32 on Mojo’s “MOJO 1000 – The Ultimate CD Buyers Guide” as a film score.
