On May 2, 1963, Black children trained in nonviolent tactics gathered in Birmingham, Alabama, to protest racial segregation. Over the course of the protest, children were arrested, blasted with fire hoses, clubbed, and attacked by dogs.
Images of the children appeared on television and in newspapers around the world, provoking global outrage. The Children’s Crusade of Birmingham, Alabama, continued through May 10.
