Flogging: Holes Dug in Ground to Protect Unborn Children of Pregnant Slaves

4 Posted by - September 14, 2023 - LATEST POSTS, SLAVERY

Most slave women worked in the fields right along with the men, enduring hard labor from sun up to sun down. Some slave women who were chosen to work inside the main house. Early adolescence for female slaves was often difficult because of the threat of exploitation. For some young women, puberty marked the beginning of a lifetime of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse from masters and mistresses, overseers, and male slaves.

For other slave women, work in the planter’s home included close interaction with their owners, which often led to intimate relationships with white men or friendships with white women. House servants would tend to the needs of their plantation mistresses by dressing them, combing their hair, sewing their clothing, and often nursing their infants. They were expected to be on call 24 hours a day.

Slave owners did not hesitate when it came to what they called disciplining their slaves, which also included pregnant women. When female slaves were whipped, they were often stripped to the waist, or tied to a tree or from a rafter in the barn. If the slave woman was pregnant, slave owners didn’t want to disturb the unborn baby, which they considered their “property.” Therefore, they forced women to dig holes in the ground, made them lie down with their pregnant bellies in the hole, and beat them viciously.

Native, black, color people were in ,what is now called the United States of America, thousands upon thousands of years before any European called Columbus or another Country came to this land.
Now, most people of color have blood from all Countries because of rape, kidnapping, selling babies, families and over and over again.
We are all of everybody. None of us can be put in a group.
Yes, they try. DNA, “What group do you look more like?” Even if you are over 50+% European. Strange that the DNA is fixed.
Yes, the new word is Trafficking. Who is stupid? Slavery has never stopped. Just changed names.

This is so true—- a documentary was shown in the late 60’s about how many white southern people still hated the back race… They were showing a group of white people who were in Church– having the service outside.. The minister was preaching on how blessed they were and himself for not being black He said right on camera—- I THANK GOD EVERY DAY ___ THAT I AM NOT BLACK… He was teaching the flock of the white men —women teens and babies to hate blacks… Unbelievable and un-imaginable…. But there it was on TouV…….Preacher of GOD?????? i don’t know what god????but Not the Our Father
      for sure…. Soome

My father was told of some of the horrors of slavery, when I asked him he would pass some of those stories down to me, he was born in 1932, not a slave himself but his grandfather was. My grandfather his father was born in 1870, his father was born in 1841. I was told I had an uncle who was lynched for looking at a white man in the eyes, I was told my grandfathers father was hung within inches of his life, then spared. My grandfather was a sharecropper down in Forest, Mississippi, one of the most segregated evil places to live, named after the infamous Bedford Forest the head of the KKK after the civil war.

  • Hondillac October 12, 2016 - 7:14 am

@William Braxton – You are a total idiot!!! How could you compare something so horrible to something that stupid!!! I would love to see a white person live in a black persons shoes for one day!!! I’m sure you would die!! So why don’t you go and hang yourself!!!!!

    • Ms. Joyce October 17, 2016 - 2:42 am

Thank you. Everyone that want to hide under unfair treatment, and discrimination comparing themselves to Blacks should be shamed into silence. When anyone speaks of family separation should shut up, many can go back to their country and find grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles. Black families were SOLD, some never holding their new baby but for minutes or days before the child was SOLD. How many of the complainers walk in the shoes of enslavement NEVER PAID FOR WORK, Blacks built a country, fought for this country, and still spat upon. @Adrine, try doing research, stop being lazy in searching for truth on your own. MAN CAN LIE ABOUT HISTORY, BUT HE CANNOT CHANGE ‘FACTS’.

If Black would ask themselves one question they would NEVER consider themselves inferior, “Why was it against the law for Black to read & write? Blacks were NEVER the product of trash from the prisons of England and its prison, unclean and uneducated. Obama would have been the ‘norm”, Bush would have been the novelty. Blacks were beaten out of fear, fear of their greatness. Remember 1619 to present, know thy self.

  • Janice Tuggle October 12, 2016 - 12:35 pm

Seeing these truths makes you understand more and more why “they” are in deniable about the part they played in the cruelty to Black that continues to this day just in a different form. It should be hard to look yourself in the mirror knowing what type of sick individuals your ancestors were and probably still are.

  • MJ August 31, 2017 - 1:38 am

“Intimate relationships or friendships?” Oh, is that what they experienced? Whomever wrote this appears to be delusional. Enslaved women were raped and brutalized, exploited, abused, treated like nothing. Big house or fields. Stop romanticizing slavery.

  • Marko davis October 30, 2017 - 7:46 am

Slavery was a war crime you can’t just walk away from a crime you have to restore and correct it and appologive white people done either one

    • Live Truth March 12, 2020 - 10:02 am

So true…They need to finally call it what it was: rape, torture, murder, getting sold away from their families & being worked harder than animals isnt a consentual intimate relationship or friendship! U can tell when a white person writes the article because its full of denials and the injustices are minimized. Stop whitewashing facts!!!

  • Brandon March 16, 2018 - 3:37 pm

My aren’t you racist and incredibly ignorant. You’re just as bad as those who think entire races are beneath their own. There’s plenty of history of every race being cruel, killing, enslaving and selling their own people. Open a book instead of your mouth.

    • Scott November 14, 2019 - 12:36 am

I never heard so much shit in my entire life. Are you trying to say that all white people’s ancestors owned slaves? Are you mental or what? In the UK most people (yes white people) at the time the Atlantic slave trade was happening, were very very poor. They worked for a pittance and had a life expectancy of about 45. Malnutrition, consumption and all sorts of preventable diseases were rampant. Children (yes white children) were sent to work houses if the father died and the mother had no money to feed them. People dropped like flies in the winter because they only had rags to wear, no fuel to burn and it is minus 15 outside, and you think that these people were slave owners!! You really are a delusional bunch of cunts. Only very few rich people owned slaves, and certainly none of my ancestors owned any slaves…So why the fuck should I say sorry to you?

      • Nancy March 13, 2020 - 7:41 pm

Scott, the average number of enslaved people owned in this country was about four. A lot of farmers, artisans and small merchants would have a few enslaved people working for them or they would temporarily hire an enslaved worker, usually paying the owner for the use of his “property.” Of course there were also many poor white people who were maltreated and who suffered but there is a false idea that slavery was only part of big plantations culture and predominantly in the South– like Gone with the Wind. If you read about the arguments and compromises in congress at the time it was similar to the gun issue today. Politicians in slave owning states wanted everyone to own a slave or two in order to normalize it and increase their own wealth as breeders of a human work force. As property, slaves were used as collateral and investments for financial institutions everywhere. The world economy was inextricably tied to slavery much the way they are now tied to the fossil fuel industry. In fact, trafficked Africans and oil are both Black Gold: Energy. It is greed pure and simple– when human lives are expendable and unspeakable horror is tolerated for the sake of monetary profit.

How else can you move on?
Everyone involved in this era is long dead. No one alive today was a salve owner. Stop blaming living ripple for the sins of the dead. Move on.

when you stop benefiting from slavery and the systems of oppression, we will move on. Have you moved on from the Holocaust or from 9/11? You should.

  • Nancy March 13, 2020 - 7:09 pm

We have to learn from the past because the past is not over. I am appalled by the ignorant callous comments by white people, and curious as to why they are even reading these stories. I am white and read because we were never taught most of this in school. I am from the South and had ancestors on both sides of the civil war and I can say with full conviction that these horrors are true. The history of slavery and racial abuse in this country must be exposed and discussed. Denial of our shameful history should be a crime just as denying the Holocaust is a crime in Germany. The hundreds of years of slavery and the ongoing racist aftermath is a chronic Holocaust. Our own American Holocaust is largely ignored or touched on sadly, briefly, by white people but never really confronted. It is good that information is revealed more and more everyday through scholarship, search engines and first person accounts. I am trying to listen and learn. And I apologize to anyone else on this site if I come off as “whitesplaning.” There is no way I can experience what an African American feels but I do know the feeling of shame.
