In a video posted on The Black History School, we learn more about After the Civil War, 4 million slaves were set free, and the Reconstruction Era began. Southern states would have to give civil rights to Blacks and pay them wages for their work. As a result, the economy in southern states plummeted, and groups like the KKK violently protested against civil rights for freed Blacks. President Rutherford B. Hayes ended Reconstruction within the first year of his presidency. He replaced officials with influential and rich Southerners. Soon southern states freely and blatantly discriminated against Black citizens.
