Edward D. Cannady was one of the founders of Portland’s African American newspaper, The Advocate. “The Advocate was an independent, non-partisan, non-sectarian weekly newspaper for the intelligent discussion and authentic diffusion of matter appertaining to the colored people, especially of Portland and the State of Oregon.”
The weekly newspaper featured birth and death announcements, hotel and society news, and general good news about the race.
Cannady was the first husband of Beatrice Hulon Morrow, a civil rights advocate who also later became the co-editor of The Advocate (when they met he was a waiter at a hotel in Portland). Beatrice Morrow Cannady was one of the founders of Oregon’s chapter of the NAACP.
