Lil Johnson was a blues singer largely lost to the history of music. She was active in the industry during the mid-1920s and into the late 1930s. What she is best known her brand of hokum or dirty blues. Basically, comedic, raunchy blues based around sexual innuendo.

Career and Recordings of Lil Johnson

In 1929, Lil Johnson headed to Chicago and recorded five tunes. There was a gap in her recordings perhaps to perform live, working as a session singer, or under a different name. When she did return to the studio in 1935 she laid down her more known raunchy songs “Anybody Want to Buy My Cabbage?” and “Get ‘Em from the Peanut Man (Hot Nuts).” Lil Johnson also recorded “Press My Button (Ring My Bell).”

Toward the end of her career, she recorded a number songs—reportedly 40—for the Vocalion label, a known staple of blues at this time. In 1936 she released “My Stove Is In Good Condition” and “Sam the Hot Dog Man.” Some of her final dirty blues classics were released in 1937 and include “Meat Balls” and “If It Don’t Fit (Don’t Force It).”

After 1937, Lil Johnson simply disappears from music and nothing else is mentioned of her career or personal life.
